what is the difference Between a ritual & spell?

I have NEVER performed a ritual to be honest i only did a couple of spells like i do not really have a religion i believe (by believe i mean know they or real) in god and gods/goddesses & dragons i just do not have a religion. Anyway i do not get the purpose of a ritual is it to power your tools or worship something please explain. I mean is it odd i only do spells like i am starting to work with dragons but i need a little help on that so if any of you guys work with them be sure to send me a message.

A ritual is a series of actions and invocations which you do in a setting which you have designed for that purpose and at a time which you have dedicated to that purpose. A ritual does not have to be religious. I am Wiccan, so my rituals are religious - they are dedicated to my Goddess and God.

A spell is normally an organised series of ritual actions and poetic utterances, yes, so it is really a kind of ritual in itself, though usually not overtly religious. A spell may be performed during another ritual, or it may just be a ritual on its own. Spells can be more or less formally ritualistic, but I would say it is normal for a spell to be carefully designed and thought about in advance, so that does tend to make it ritualistic. Spellcraft can also be like cooking, or art, or drama ... all of these are really rituals too, because they involve actions performed in a particular order and designed for a particular purpose.
