How far is Universal Studios L.A. from Warner Bros. Studios?

I'm planning a trip in December to Los Angeles and my friends and I would like to see The Tonight Show (Universal Studios) and The Ellen Degeneres Show (Warner Bros. Studios). So we're trying to find a hotel that's near each place and also close enough for us to do some sight-seeing and shopping. Any help?
Is that easily accessible to downtown L.A. also? Is it worth going downtown?

Warner is in Burbank, both are close to Hollywood, Warner is easy to get to on the bus, Universal is only one stop from Hollywood on the train, so they are both reasonably central, if u stayed in Hollywood it would be easy to get to both of them. I stayed at the Ramada in West Hollywood, it was only a 5 min ride on the DASH (bus) into Hollywood BLVD to the station to interchange to Universal and Warner.

EDIT- yeah its easy t get downtown,but there is really not much down there, alot of museums, art centres etc, business centre, I prefer the Hollywood side, Beverly centre has good shopping, Farmers markets. I did a tour with starlines, it was a great way to orient myself with the city, plus we went to rodeo drive and farmers markets, downtown. I wouldnt recommend the stars homes tour, boring.
