What did the dragon represent in ancient pagan religions?

I think some of the Druids had dragon tatoos.

The dragon represented either a Goddess or feminine power that was defeated by a masculine power... or any ancient power that was later defeated by a modern power. Or any hidden power that was later mastered by someone who could in turn wield it.
Does that make any sense to you?
Like Python defeated by Apollo so that he could take over the Oracle, Sir George and the Dragon, etc.

It is also a symbol of a heroic quest, a long journey for knowledge, power, strength... something worth fighting for that is finally attained.
Like the golden apples, or the golden fleece.

Now, that being said, there are different kind of dragons. In modern elemental magical tradtions, the wyrm or salamander may represent the element of fire. A winged dragon (wyrm or quadropedal) may represent the element of air. OR, a dragon might represent the union of all elements, it being a creature of the Earth- a gold hoarder that lives in a cave, that breathes fire, and flies and has the form of a sea serpent.

Anyway, different traditions have them representing different things.

In the east, of course, the dragon represents something wholley different. They are generally considered to be omens of Good Luck there.
