Bottle Pendant

I have some loose mercury, it was in a glass pendant that broke. what should I do with the mercury?

I currently have it in a pill bottle.
When the pendant broke the mercury didn't spill. I emptied it into the pill bottle, without touching the mercury. It is about 1/8th of a teaspoon.

As you probably know, mercury is extremely poisonous if you touch it or inhale its vapors so ensure that the bottle you have it in is tightly stoppered and make sure that none spilled when the pendant (why would you have a pendant with mercury...) broke. If you did have some spill, sprinkle the area with zinc powder then clean it up and put it in an airtight container.

DO NOT simply dispose of it as normal trash, even if it is sealed. If the bottle were to break or puncture, someone handling the trash could come in contact with it and it would almost certainly be fatal.

Material safety data sheets for mercury indicate that it should be handled as hazardous waste and sent to a RCRA approved waste facility.
