Yes, my dad sold TVs so we had 2 at that time plus all sorts of other eletronic gadgets.
"The Ed Sullivan Show", "Candid Camera", "The Jack Benny Show", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents"
4. What were the popular cars? What did they cost? How were they different from today's cars?
I remember the family station wagon; a woodie! Ours was a Chevy.
Gas was about 25 cents a gallon!
5. What were the fashions then for both men and women? What were the hairstyles for both sexes?
Fashions were baggy pants/suits and wing-tipped shoesfor men, women wore a lot of sweater sets or sets with matching skirts, below the knee, and a short heeled pump.
Hair styles were very short (if not military buzzed) for men, bobbed or short, (wavy or curly) for women.
6. What were some fads then?
Records, dance clubs, drive-ins, roller-skating, outdoor theaters
7. How was the economy?
7% unemployment during the recession
Annual yearly wage was $4,600.00
8. Who was President? What do you remember about him?
Dwight D. Eisenhower
He looked "grandfatherly", was a WWII war general, was in second term as POTUS
9. How did you feel about Sputnik?
I wasn't interested in space stuff until later. Much later.
10. Did you know someone who had a bomb shelter?
No
11. Did you have air raid drills in school? What did you do for these drills?
We had air-raid drills in the whole city. The only thing they did was test the sirens.
12. Was the world safer then or now?
Then
13. Other comments about the 1950's
Those were times when people really didn't have much to worry about. Stress wasn't a health issue. People were much friendlier; you could trust everybody. Kids didn't get kidnapped or worse. Gangs/kids didn't run wild. You could leave your doors unlocked and windows open without screens and no one bothered you. They really were happier times. Peaceful times.
