I got commissioned by a family member to make models?

I need to make clay sculptures and those sculptures will be used as models for a line of plushies.
Previously, I got commissioned the illustrations for mascots which these plushies will be based on and that was easy since I've done a lot of illustration in the past.
Well, the money involved in this project was great so I decided to whore myself out a bit and take on the assignment, but lets note that I've never done sculpting and I'm unsure which materials and techniques to use. For example:
What kind of clay?
What should the model's skeleton should be made of?
What do I color them with?
Should I color them?

how big? If not too large polymer clay is your best option. I guess they won't be too large if they get mass produced.

Remember that you have been drawing for quite a while until you got really good at it? It probably will take you a while to get really good at sculpture, so expect that project to be quite some work. Though if you have a lot of experience in illustration it might help you, though not inevitably.

Plaster might be an option if you insist on carving. Though you probably would need to let it completely dry and shellack or stabilize it with paint, it's more fragile, but cheap to make larger things with.

Whether you should color them or not depends on what your customer wants. There are colored polymer clays or You Can paint them after they are finished.

I would recommend reading up about working with polymer clay before you start. There are plenty of websites which are easy to find with a simple search. You should also check what books your library has on the subject.

epoxy isn't a good idea. once you made a sculpture somebody is going to make a mold of it and then they are probably going to cast the figure in resin. Resin is good for casting, but not good for modeling.
