Sitting Glass
Can aquarium light sit on glass top or will that filter out all UV waves?
I plan on plants and fish and my new florescent lighting fixture says it shouldn't be placed over open water.. Will sitting it on a glass top filter out the light that is important for the plants? What does everyone else do to make sure the light doesn't come in contact with the water?
Some glass will filter UV light and without some form of optical spectroscopy You Can't know for certain the glass isn't filtering those wavelengths. However, there are two important points to consider. First, most commercial glass, unless made to, will not filter UV radiation (common window glass does not). Second and most importantly, photosynthesis occurs mostly as a result of light in the visible spectrum. This means as long as the glass apperas clear to the naked eye, photosynthesis can occur.
