What is the significance of the knife in occult practices?
Ive seen many pictures of altars that featured a skull, candle, and knife and some herbs or feathers. and on Wicca altars that had a knife in it as well among other items of similar fashion. im in the process of studying iconography and symbolism in occult, Wicca, necromancy and pagan rituals and id appreciate some assistance, as ive hit a snag and cannot find any good sources to point me on the right path. thanks again in advance
The items that are placed on an altar are tools and/or symbols. The knife, the feathers and the herbs are both. Uses and symbols are usually dictated by your training or your course of study and may vary from individual to individual in many aspects. For instance in my case, the knife represents the sacred element of fire not air, it is not black-handled or blunted, and I may use it to cut, slice and sever actual objects during the course of a ritual. It may also be used to represent divine masculine energy, direct my will or intentions, or as a conduit to control the flow of ritual "energies"
Feathers are the same, they can be used as an actual tool to direct energy, to waft incense, to write or inscribe, and/or they may be symbols for air or depending on the type of bird a whole cornucopia of other meanings. For instance a crow feather may represent a deity who is often attended by crows, or it may represent a particular aspect of crow mythology specific to the individuals belief.
In short there is no one single answer to your question about iconography and symbolism because "occult" practices are so wide and varied and pagan beliefs and necromantic practice so different from tradition to tradition and individual to individual.
