what is the difference between fluorite and aquamarine?
my grandparents went mining and brought me back a stone that is mostly pale blue with a very faint corner of purple. i just would like to know which of the two stones i have.
Fluorite and aquamarine are completely different minerals. Fluorite is calcium fluoride, while aquamarine is the blue variety of beryl, a beryllium aluminum silicate.
The easiest way to tell beryl from fluorite is hardness. Fluorite ranks a 4 on the Mohs scale, meaning that it can be scratched by a steel knife or by quartz. Beryl ranks between 7.5 and 8, meaning that even quartz (hardness 7) won't scratch it (corundum, including ruby and sapphire, and diamond will scratch beryl). But you probably want to avoid scratching the stone unless you have to.
But, I think the color alone is enough of a clue. If purple beryl exists, it is Very Rare; some morganite can be purplish-pink, but it is also unusual to see a beryl crystal with more than one color. Fluorite crystals frequently contain sections of different colors. Blue fluorite is uncommon but not that rare, and purple is very common. So light blue with purple is almost certainly fluorite. (If it had been just a light blue stone, there would be other possibilities, notably topaz)
