Aren't denominations against what the Lord wishes?
I mean there are almost 34 000 official denominations of Christianity, most of which are calling all the rest heretics and in the light of Philippians 2:2 it seems to me that this is not good in the eyes of God, not good at all 
Even islam has less than ten denominations.
Possibly. Whatever field of life you look at, you will always find some people who disagree with some aspects of the group, and that some people split up and create their own groups.
However, most of the mainstream Christian denominations agree with each other on the central/essential tenets of the faith. Each denomination has a different view of certain aspects of the Bible. Usually, though the central beliefs are the same, i.e. Christ, His divinity, His sacrifice, God's grace etc. Many of them work together on ecumenical projects too
Considering this, it is possible that each denomination also plays a different role in the wider church body, in that they appeal to different types of people.
For example, a more egalitarian individual may prefer Christian brethren churches, or lively people may prefer more charismatic churches like the Pentecostal churches, some may prefer respect of tradition in the Orthodox churches, some may prefer a strong emphasis on Bible study which many evangelical churches have and some may have a strong mission focus such as Christian & Missionary Alliance.
