Magic Set
How do I decide on a good magic set for children (about 8 years old)?
Ideally, less than $50
Start with the manufacturer's recommendation. While I am certain your kiddie is the most brilliant child in the world, get them a magic kit designed for their age.
While many kits now come with DVDs, I like ones that also include written instructions.
If you're looking for brand names, I recommend the following -
Magic in a Minute featuring Mac King. You'll find lots of individual tricks in this line as well as the box of mystery if you want a kit. These are well made. Some include DVDs. All include written instructions. All also include a secret code to offer access to Mac King's kid-friendly web site where more magic can be learned.
Melissa and Doug - These are pricier kits, but pieces are made of wood and designed to last. You won't get as many tricks in a kit, but you'll get better made items. Stay away from the Melissa and Doug Card Trick selection.
Phantasma - Good stuff. Lots of heavy duty cardboard props. Flashy looking stuff. Kids love it.
If you want to encourage your child to read, I would also recommend a couple of different books:
Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. Easy to read. Lots of pictures to help you through. Everything from card tricks to big stage illusions You Can build in the garage.
Karl Fulves' Card Tricks for Children - a few very good card tricks that build in difficulty.
There are lots more books. You'll find them at the public library in section 793.8 or at your local bookstore with books on games like chess and poker.
