Kava Root
Can you take herbs such as valerian root, passionflower, Kava Kava etc. whiile taking an antidepressant?
I am currently taking celexa. Its not working that well and i was wondering if You Can mix herbs with this medication. thanks
Most of them should not be.
Passion flower has relatively unknown pharmacological properties, similar to benzodiazepine tranquilizers, but several thousand times less potent. It has not been evaluated for drug interactions.
Valerian root contains relatively unknown compounds, and has been shown to disrupt the activity of Cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver, as well as UGT enzymes, both of which are absolutely critical for drug metabolism and give the substance a very high potential for interacting with an enormous variety of drugs.
Kava Kava has caused a large number of cases of liver failure, including about a dozen that have required liver transplantation. It contains an enormous number of active compounds, several that act as MAOIs, act as tranquilizers and mimic the action of virtually every type of antidepressant compound. It's comperable to taking a random dose of about twenty random psychiatric medications based on its content. Not a good idea.
And definitely don't mix St. John's Wort with antidepressant drugs. That's a good way to cause Serotonin Syndrome.
Basically, as a rule, do not mix unregulated, untested herbal supplements with psychiatric medications unless you are specifically and directly told it's okay to do so by your doctor.
