Why do minerals included in crystals appear in different colors than their natural state?
It fascinates me that individual minerals can manifest in so many different colors, but I have no idea what makes this happen.
For example, hematite, composed mostly of iron, naturally has a dark gray color much like the natural color of iron, but when hematite is found included in a crystal like quartz, it appears as deep red or even bright red. Furthermore, it can even appear a vivid orange color, such as the case of Tangerine Quartz, in which hematite dust is bonded to the surface of Clear Quartz due to extreme heat and pressure.
I've also read that aquamarines have their blue-green color due to minute traces of Iron.
Similarly, crystals with lithium inclusions, like lithium quartz and lepidolite, show a violet or lavender color, while lithium is in fact a silvery white metal.
Could someone explain how this works?
The color of an molecule is due to light coming in and exciting electrons to a higher state and then being released as the electrons fall back to their ground state. In their elemental state the electrons are at a certain ground state. When the element forms a molecule it accepts more electrons, thus raising the level of the ground state. This changes the energy released when the electrons fall into their ground state. The color of light is dependent on the energy of the light. So when the energy changes, so does the color.
