what does this poem mean (This Lunar Beauty-W.H.Auden)?
This Lunar Beauty- W.H. Auden
This lunar beauty
Has no history
Is complete and early,
If beauty later
Bear any feature
It had a lover
And is another.
This like a dream
Keeps other time
And daytime is
The loss of this,
For time is inches
And the heart's changes
Where ghost has haunted
Lost and wanted.
But this was never
A ghost's endeavour
Nor finished this,
Was ghost at ease,
And till it pass
Love shall not near
The sweetness here
Nor sorrow take
His endless look.
"This Lunar Beauty" could be "The Moon" or a person whose face looks like "The Moon."
If the former, it disappears at daytime. If the latter, it "comes alive" at night, and fades at "Daylight."
The last stanza is tougher. It sounds like, "Love will not approach during the nighttime," and
"Something sad will not occur" or "Someone sad will not look" until nighttime is over, and daylight arrives. The comment "This, like a dream, keeps other time" is interesting, because it means that
"each person operates on its own schedule," or "the moon operates on its own schedule."
It is difficult to tell whether this poem is speaking about "The Moon in the Sky" or using it as a Metaphor for a person who reminds him of "The Moon."
I studied Auden in my "Modern English Poetry Class," but I can't remember this poem being in the textbook! (It was at least 44 years ago, so maybe I am wrong!)
My book, however, is in "another location," so I would have to go there and read it before I could give you more feedback (maybe from my notes from the Professor's lecture???).
Unfortunately, there is no Internet Connection there!
