Gothic Pagan
What is your opinion on the gothic subculture?
I mean, why are there so many haters? Then there are the people who think goths are satanists and pagans and stuff, or suicidal. Anyways, opinions?
I don't follow, it's just interesting to know there are others who like this stuff, I live in Indonesia, and not very affected by all these cultures and subcultures, so yeah
Alot of the bad stereotypes around goths actually are started about people that are not even goth. But rather about people that are superficially similar in appearance/look.
First off, a goth is just an avid fan of goth rock... that is it. It is a music subculture that started back in the late 70's-early 80's. Goth rock came out of post punk and punk rock... by such bands as siouxsie and the banshees, bauhaus, the sisters of mercy, christian death, etc... (Some even place the cure in there, but technically while they are goth friendly, they are not actual goth rock.)
The goth looks started out due to people dressing like some of the bands (who themselves were dressed in the new romantic style). The problems started when other people who were not fans of the music started dressing in the same look and started calling themselves goths too... and since they did not get the point, they did some really stupid stuff and the goth subculture got blamed.
Add to this the media started calling anyone who dressed in black or listened to "dark music" (everything from shock rock, to metal, to you name it) a goth. And if a kid dressed all in black did something bad, it became the medias excuse for why the person did it... "they were goth."
It got really bad when Marylin Manson's fans started calling themselves goths... btw this is were they actually coined the term for poseurs who call themselves goth... "spooky kids" as that was the name of mansons band. (Manson is shock rock btw)
But that is where the negative stereotypes came from... the actual goth music subculture is alot of fun and most of the people are pretty happy. (in fact while I know quite a few pagans in the goth subculture, most of the goths I know are actually christians.)
