Where did our image of death come from?
Why do we see death as a hooded figure, not showing his face, with skeleton hands, and carrying a scythe?
The skeleton represents death. I think that part is pretty clear.
The scythe is for harvesting. Death harvests people like a farmer harvests grain.
As for the face, I feel like it's shown more often than it isn't. I would say though that a shrouded face would represent death being unknown.
I think the grim reaper image comes from the medieval period but I'm not 100% on that.
