Can you wear a costume and not cosplay at Comic Con?

I am going to New York Comic Con with a group of friends. We are generally new at this and would like to dress up, however I know people get very involved in cosplay.
So I am asking:
1. Is it acceptable to dress up without being overly involved in the character?
2. Is it okay to go as very recognizable people (for instance, DC superheroes)?

Yes and yes. At any con, it is acceptable to dress how you want, You Can be in character as much or as little as you like or not at all. There are two things to remember, smile or strike a cool pose when you are asked for a picture. And have a great time.
