Bronze Sculpture
does anyone know of a good ceramic core mix for bronze sculpture casting?
i need to cast a small bronze bust but do not want to cut the wax. I need a mix for a solid ceramic core.
You Can use the same mix as for the rest. 2 parts of silica sand and one part of plaster is a general investment - though use only if you are not doing ceramic shell. The burnout time for ceramic shell is much shorter than for standard investment, therefore I wouldn't mix the two. If you are doing ceramic shell you will need slurry and see how well you can deal with it. I would be a concerned whether the water on the inside can escape fast enough during the burnout or if it would lead to cracking - it's not going to be able to dry while it is enclosed with wax.
Very importantly you will need core pins, even if you don't enclose it entirely. If you don't know what that is ask your teacher to explain it to you. You can also search the internet for it.
Generally it is not good practice to leave investment inside a piece as it can lead to corrosion years down the line. I wouldn't do it if it is something you want to sell, though if it is just something for you, it is really all up to you.
