Wasn't better saying the Mass in Latin instead of the vernacular?
I loved hearing the Gregorian Chants and other music in Latin, the quite meditative silence.the ringing of the bells to signify the time of the consecration of the body and blood of Jesus.
Now, we have a lot of English ( or vernacular languages) singing, constant prayers of the priests, four readings of the bible and Communion in the hand instead of kneeling at the altar rail
It was better in Latin. Now we have people understanding what's being said, which only led to laymen interpretations, questioning the validity of the word, free thinking, and crackpot theories like evolutionism and astronomy.
When it wasn't understood, people accepted what their elders told them because there was no way to know any better. I believe a firm foundation in faith can only be laid through proper understanding.
Other than the linguistic aspect of control, I can understand where you're coming from with the somber chants and ritualistic procedures to invoke a more religious 'mood' during the service, which is the whole point of all the singing, prayers, readings, and communion.
